Photo Tour in Benin; Wildlife, Nature and Birds

12 Days / 11 nights photographers tour through Benin

Day 1: Arrival in Cotonou (based on early morning flight)

Transfer from airport to Benin Royal Hotel.

Free morning to rest for a while or explore the neighbourhood.

Before lunch we’ll have a welcome drink meet and introduce the members, the photographer and other crew. Talk over the program and some information about Benin, the people, do’s and don’ts etc. Have lunch in a local restaurant.

Visit the stilt city Ganvie. Dinner at Dream Beach restaurant at the beach.

Day 2: Cotonou  –  Ouidah  – Grand Popo ca. 90 km

Drive to Ouidah along the beach road.  A short photo stop where fishermen pull their nets out of the sea.

Visit Zinsou Museum with Photos of African Photographers. Have lunch in Ouidah at Côté Pêche drive further to Grand Popo.

Late afternoon, excursion Birds Island (this is a typical ornithological route) by ‘piroque’boat thru the mangrove woods on the Mono River. According the season and tide you can see different species of migrant birds like scooters, herons and hawks. The birds come here for nesting, if you’re lucky also alligators and lizards can be seen. Early in the morning and late afternoon the birds come to search for food.

Day 3:  Grand Popo – Houegle village (ca. 44 km)

In between the excursion a picknick style breakfast. By ‘piroque’boat to visit Salt Island, Bird Island and the ‘La Bouche du Roi’ (the mouth of the king) this is a beautiful route over the river with unspoiled beaches and little fishermen villages, where women make salt and you can see the mangroves and many birds along the route. At the end the river flows into the sea, this is where it is called La Bouche du Roi.  For the ones who like to swim it is possible. After swimming, back by boat.

Lunch in local restaurant.

Drive from Grand Popo to Houegle village for overnight stay. Have a welcome drink with the chief and people of the village. Time to look around in the village.

In the evening dinner and entertainment with local music and dance.

Overnight stay in tents.

Day 4: Houegle village – Kikélé Bassila (395 km)

Departure from Houegle village, have breakfast in Lokossa.

Drive to Kikélé district of Bassila.

Lunch along the road in a local restaurant.

We will go in the sacred forest of Kikélé to observe the tame white thighed black and white colobus (Colobus vellerosus), the biggest anthropoid species of the country.

Dinner at the camping site and overnight stay in tents.

Day 5: Kikélé – Tanguieta – ca. 224 km

Departure after breakfast. Two stops on the road in Djougou for lunch and Natitingou for a drink. In Tanguieta dinner and overnight stay in hotel Yakti.

Day 6: Tanguieta – Pendjari National Park

Departure early in the morning at 5 a.m. to visit the Pendjari NP. By jeep we enter the park. The animals go and drink at the pools at sunrise and sunset. There are many different animals to see in the park, around 500 West-African elephants live here, many different species of antelope, lions, hippo’s, crocodiles, warthogs, many birds, monkeys and much more.  Have lunch at Pendjari lodge. Some free time to rest or look around.

In the afternoon we will go back to the pools to spot more wildlife.

Dinner and overnight stay at Pendjari Lodge, the lodge is located in the middle of the park, 15 km from one of the lakes Mare Bali.

Day 7: Pendjari National Park – Natitingou

The last day to see the animals in Pendjari National Park.

Lunch in park at Pendjari Lodge.

We will visit the waterfall of Kota. You can also swim if you like.

Drive back to Natitingou. Dinner and overnight stay in hotel Kaba.

Day 8: Natitingou – Tata Somba – Taneka-Beri – Natitingou

Drive to Boukoumbe to visit the Tata Somba villages with the Tammari people and their typical style houses and culture.

We will have lunch in a local restaurant and drive and walk about 2 km to Taneka-Beri to visit the village and the grot.

Dinner and overnight stay in Natitingou in hotel Kaba.

Day 9: Natitingou – Savalou (308 km)

After breakfast we will drive to Savalou. In Bante we will stop for lunch and visit the crocodiles river, hill of the royal python and if time allows the sacred fish pool, the tunnel hills of Agbon.

Dinner and overnight stay in Savalou in F&F hotel.

Day 10: Savalou – Porto Novo (218 km)

After breakfast we drive to Porto Novo and have lunch at Jardin des Plantes et de Nature.

After lunch we go by boat to Aguegues. There are many birds to see around the lake, like different species of Kingfisher.

Dinner and overnight stay in Porto Novo in Songhai Centre.

Day 11: Porto Novo – Cotonou

After breakfast we drive to Cotonou and visit the Dantokpa market. You can see many different things from fruits to second hand clothes and voodoo items.

Lunch in local restaurant.

Afternoon free time for shopping or relaxing at the pool or beach.

Dinner and overnight stay in hotel El Dorado.

Day 12: Cotonou – home

Depending on your flight you will be transferred to the airport.

For the ones who like to spend some days longer at the beach, we can arrange it for you.
